OK Go is famous for making brain-twisting music videos.
Remember the video for their song “The One Moment”? They clearly explain how they did it and I still don’t understand.
Even so, OK Go teaches us how to be better musicians…
Damian Kulash, lead singer and director of the videos, says “The One Moment” video “is a celebration of (and a prayer for) those moments in life when we are most alive.”
“Humans are not equipped to understand our own temporariness,” Kulash said. “It will never stop being deeply beautiful, deeply confusing, and deeply sad that our lives and our world are so fleeting. We have only these few moments. Luckily, among them there are a few that really matter, and it’s our job to find them.”
What this band has done is like no other band today (you should really check out their other videos here).
What can musicians learn from this unique band?
Here are three things:
1) Put time into your music videos
Video is the most shareable content today. People would rather watch a music video than listen to audio (or read a blog post, which shows the irony of this post).
You don’t need a budget to make a decent video. And you definitely don’t have to try to out-do OK Go. You just need a good idea, a friend with a decent camera, and some time.
2) But first, make good music
You might have the best music video idea, but if your music sucks, no one will watch more than 30 seconds of the video. I feel like I shouldn’t have to say this, but you’re a musician so you should be making good music. That’s where it all starts.
And OK Go’s music is good. Just listen to the songs sans the videos — solid stuff.
3) Never stop reaching
If you go back and watch OK Go’s videos, you’ll notice that they just get better and more complex. Their first viral video was of them doing choreography on treadmills to the rhythm of their song “Here It Goes Again.” Not too complex, but really creative.
Never stop reaching or trying to get better. Keep brainstorming for that next great idea.
